DOES ANYONE HAVE THIS GRILL? IS IT INFRARED?

Ranger

Lewis,

No, it is not infrared. It has a 110V electric heating element & adjustable controller, much like the element in an electric oven. It heats & cooks great.

Wizard

Hi ya... I just received the electric Companion. I have only used it once, and I kow it is supposed to be low and slow gooking, but I BBQ'd chicken yesterday and I was a little disappointed. It tasted fine but took over an hour and the skin still did not get a nice BBQ crisp texture. Not looking to burn it, but expected a little texture tot he skin.

Ranger

Wizard,
Did you preheat the grill at least 15/20 minutes? It should be 400/450 at that point. Was the chicken just out of the fridge? If it was very cold, it brings the temp down inside the grill. Was it a whole chicken or pieces? Did you have the controller on high?
These are just a few things that can affect the way the Companion cooks. Check the internal temp with an oven thermometer after 20 minutes. Call Holland if it is not at least 400 degrees. Hpe this helps.

Thanks... yes I preheated more than 30 mins. I checked the temp with an overn thermometer and it read 300. The controller was on HIGH the whole time and the chicken was marinated and still chilly, Would not want to have chicken warm up like a steak. Fixed bacon in the AM on the grill and took forever.. not crispy. Will try again to see if thinkgs get better

Ranger

Wizard,
Sounds like your grill is not working properly. I recommend that you Holland at 800-880-9766. They have a good tech dept that should be able to correct your problem.

Linda

I just purchased the Companion Grill and am also disappointed with it. Took almost an hour to grill a small steak. I will try using it one more time, but if not better satisfied I will return it. Too much money for a medicore grill.

Jake

I've used the little Companion--gas--for about 5 years now and really like it. I felt the key is to occasionally put an oven thermometer (Wal Mart about $4) in there now and then to make sure it's getting up to at least 400 degrees. At 400, it will cook anything. Just my thoughts

Linda,
The Companion is not a mediocre grill. My RV club has many Companions, both old & new. They work great!
If yours does not preheat to 400+ in 15 minutes, something is not right. You may have a bad regulator or ?. Holland will get it corrected, but they need to talk to you so they can ask the right questions. Call them, they can't help if you don't contact them.
