Just started my new BH421 for the first time and noticed the temp ran about 500. is this normal or is something wrong? I also noticed that the gasket inside the thermometer had buckled and fell to one side

You need to be more specific. All Holland grills start with BH421. Are you using LP gas or NG gas?
500 degrees would be normal, but too hot, for a grill set up for LP if you have it hooked up to NG. Get the complete model number (BH421XXX) & serial number, then call Holland. 800-880-9766 They will be glad to help.

that would be BH421AG6 and I am using LP gas.

Are you sure the Holland gage is calibrated? Get a Thermal Works digital thermometer and check the temp near the cooking surface.

Check your temp with an oven thermometer. Set it in the middle of the grill and let it sit for about 20 minutes. That will give you a true cooking temp on your grill. The gauges do not always tell the tale.

I agree with Caldwell. The reason I mentioned the product from Thermal Works is I also use it to measure my meat temp. Oven temp gage would work as well.
